Orbicular jasper is known for having circles or dots sprinkled through it, as is visible in this coaster set from Madagascar. These dots are actually needle-like crystals radiating from a central point to create a spherical inclusion in the jasper.
Jasper is a rock aggregate of quartz, chalcedony and other minerals that formed in a sedimentary environment, probably with hot water circulating various trace minerals and elements. Jasper forms when these minerals consolidate into a mass, and it's at this time when the spherical crystals form.
Each coaster is 85mm wide and 10mm tall, and together they weigh 413g.
