When water rich in calcium carbonate emerges from a hot spring the minerals precipitate out of the water to form aragonite or calcite crystals. The various colors represent the availability of trace elements when the crystals formed.
Mexican onyx is a trade name for the less sexy name calcium carbonate. This material can have other names as well: Egyptian alabaster, marble and travertine, for example. Proper marble and travertine are different stones, so, it can be confusing.
These trays from Mexico are great for fruit and veg snacks, and for displaying on their own.
