Hoploscaphites nicoletti is an ammonite (a nautilus relative) that lived in South Dakota 70 million years ago, when it was a shallow inland sea. In fact, these ammonites lived in an ecosystem that was slowly disappearing as the Western Interior Seaway dried up over the following 5 million years.
Each of these specimens includes several ammonites in the matrix. The smallest specimen includes at least one turritella fossil.
