Choose from a range of sizes. Too small a ring standa, and your object is more likely to roll away. Too large, and the ring stand seems to be on the verge of swallowing the object. We recommend a ring stand that is about 1/3 the diameter of the object you want to immobilize. We feel it's a nice compromise between aesthetics and safety.
To find the diameter of an object, we use a fabric tape measure to measure the circumference, and then we divide by 3.14 (a.k.a., pi). And, we definitely use a calculator. We're not masochists. This tends to be much easier and faster than attempting to measure the diameter directly. You can use a string or ribbon, if you don't have a fabric tape measure. Then you would just measure the string.
